چکیده

Oscillations are a prevalent feature of brain recordings. They are believed to play key roles in neural communication and computation. Current analysis methods for studying neural oscillations often implicitly assume the oscillations are sinusoidal. While these approaches have proven fruitful, here we show that there are numerous instances in which neural oscillations are nonsinusoidal. We highlight approaches to characterize nonsinusoidal features and account for them in traditional spectral analysis. Rather than being a nuisance, we discuss how these nonsinusoidal features may provide critical, heretofore overlooked physiological information related to neural communication, computation, and cognition.

Nonsinusoidal Beta Oscillations Reflect Cortical Pathophysiology in Parkinson's Disease.

Oscillations in neural activity play a critical role in neural computation and communication. There is intriguing new evidence that the nonsinusoidal features of the oscillatory waveforms may inform underlying physiological and pathophysiological characteristics. Time-domain waveform analysis approaches stand in contrast to traditional Fourier-based methods, which alter or destroy subtle wavefo...

Nonsinusoidal oscillations underlie pathological phase-amplitude coupling in the motor cortex in Parkinson's disease

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is associated with abnormal beta oscillations (13-30 Hz) in the basal ganglia and motor cortex (M1). Recent reports show that M1 beta-high gamma (50-200 Hz) phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) is exaggerated in PD and is reduced following acute deep brain stimulation (DBS). Here we analyze invasive M1 electrocorticography recordings in PD patients on and off DBS, and in isol...

Torque Ripple Reduction in Switched Reluctance Motors by Rotor Poles Shape and Excitation Pulse Width Modification

In this paper, at first, a 24/16 three-phase switched reluctance motor is designed, then the rotor poles shape tips corrected for reduction ripple of single-phase torque waveform. By doing this, the single-phase torque waveform has a flat surface and consequently, the single-phase torque ripple is reduced. Also, due to the commutation between the machine phases, the torque drops during this tim...

Sensitivity Analysis of Brown Model Waveform in Radar Altimetry

In satellite altimetry (radar altimetry), the altimeter emits a pulse, with known power, to the earth surface and receives it back continuously to determine of the sea surface height. The time series of the mean returned power is recorded individually at satellite as the so-called waveform. Analytical model for the waveform is first introduced by Brown, which consists of six parameters: signif...
